About me

I'm Rounak, an Australian AI solutions architect working across Australia and Japan. I design and build software for document-heavy work, research and data analysis, and I work with clients in English and Japanese.

Background

I studied mechanical engineering in Perth and began my career in automotive engineering and public transport. Programming became a larger part of my work as I moved into data analysis and then data science. I worked on project estimates, forecasting and engineering information, and built the dashboards, data models and data pipelines behind them with tools such as Power BI, SQL Server, Snowflake and Denodo.

In 2024 I co-founded an AI consultancy and led the technical work on applications for clients in Australia and Japan. I continue to support clients with agentic systems and applications, and to develop the agent framework and tools they run on.

Alongside client work, I'm building a new AI platform with a co-developer. Its working title is AI App Builder (the project page). The idea is a personal AI assistant that can take on longer-running jobs rather than single chat sessions: a weekly research summary, keeping an eye on an inbox, or a small app for managing engineering documents that an AI agent builds and then keeps up to date. It's at an early stage: the initial design is drafted and we've started building the core.

I have a Master of Professional Engineering in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Western Australia.

Quick facts

  • Languages

Client work delivered end to end in both English and Japanese, from the first workshops to the finished software.

English (native) · Japanese (business level)

  • Engineering background

Mechanical engineering before data and AI. I still think in systems, tolerances and failure modes.

  • Written specifications

Every system I design, and every significant change I make to one, starts as a written plan that records each decision and its acceptance criteria.

  • Testing

doc-processing-toolkit, the framework my AI agents are built on, can't be released until all 9,800+ unit tests pass. Every fix adds a test that fails without it.

  • Australia and Japan

Australian, living and working across both.

  • Generative AI since 2023

In 2023, at a major mining company, my colleagues and I were among the early adopters of generative AI technology: we prototyped a system that read engineering documents and extracted the data people asked for.

  • Bouldering

About nine years now, with a little competing along the way. It's a lot like debugging: read the problem, try, fall, adjust.

  • Currently

Building a personal AI assistant for long-running tasks with a co-developer, and studying for the Business Japanese Proficiency Test (BJT) with a flashcard app I built for it.
